PHSS News – October 2023: Autumn update

On 14th September we hosted the Annual Conference in association with UCL Q3P at the Sheraton Hotel, Heathrow. This brought together over 70 delegates, supported by our speakers and exhibitors to deliver an engaging conference. During the day we heard from 7 excellent speakers, sharing their insights, perspectives and guidance for delegates on how to navigate the challenges.

The opening presentation from Stephen Ward, chairman of the BSILBI/30 Cleanroom Technology Committee really set the tone for the conference, sharing insights on the very recently published updates to ISO14644 and alignment with Annex changes. The second presentation from Kyriacos Mitrophanous, Chief Scientific Officer at Oxford Biomedica looked at Next Generation LV systems, technologies and process. Following a networking break we then heard from Peter Jones, Vice President at Evox Therapeutics, learning about Exosomes and their use in development of pharmaceutical products. Michael Shenk then shared background, history and experiences from The American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) and the journey from academia to GMP. After lunch and further networking opportunities we were delighted to welcome John Short and Marta Freitas from Quell to share Challenges of transitioning from R&D to GMP, working in QC at an ATMP organisation. It is important to also mention that John and Marta are supporting the PHSS Young Professional working group and will continue to help drive this initiative as we move forward. The final presentation of the day, from Mark Hallworth, Pharmaceutical Business Manager at Particle Measuring Systems rounded off the day nicely discussing Environmental monitoring system design and implementation. We concluded the day with an interactive panel discussion, supported by Daniel Pearce - Adaptimmune, Stephen Ward - Validair (Euro) Limited, Gordon Farquharson - Critical Systems Ltd, Michael Schenk - ATCC, and Karen Rossington - Contec.

We also had the opportunity to recognise the student award winners for 2023 Ana Carolina Barata Felgar - Lonza Biologics PLC (RSSL) and Aidan Padmakumar - Brown & Burk UK Ltd (UCL). Each recipient receives an award certificate from PHSS and free membership of the Society for one year.
